Children's Voices Fill the Air, New Community Youth Choir Performs in Spring Recital By Terri King
Alpine, CA--The new Community Youth Choir shared their talent and enthusiasm with a delighted audience in their second performance on Friday, April 18, 2008 at Christ the King Episcopal Church in Alpine. Twelve members ranging in age from four to eleven years old, currently participate in this popular new music program that continues to grow. This show featured many Walt Disney favorites including solo performances like When You Wish Upon a Star, from Pinocchio and sung by Maya Martin-Spisak and Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, from Song of the South, sung by Taylor Hamilton. Additional soloists were Destiny Bach, Shannon Cooley, Katie King, and Carlie Valdes and duets were sung by Olivia Martin-Spisak & Philippa Villalobos, and Vivian & Jackie Coronado. The Community Youth Choir is sponsored by Christ the King Episcopal Church and was organized to provide a valuable music program for local youth which is led by professional music instructor, Mrs. Sharon Schwatka. Mrs. Schwatka's talent, experience and aptitude for working with children make her a perfect fit for the job. "It takes a lot of work, but the children really seem to look forward to coming to rehearsal and learning to sing in a chorale environment," she says. Mrs. Schwatka currently performs with the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra, instructs piano, violin, fiddle and voice, and has been a member of several musical groups and only recently has turned her love of music into a full-time career. "Vocal training is not all about talent. It's about discipline and enthusiasm and the joy of learning music. These traits really build confidence," says Mrs. Schwatka. With the popularity of shows like American Idol, and the influence pop stars seem to have with young people, it is no wonder that learning to sing and perform before an audience would be a welcomed local youth program. The next session of the Community Youth Choir will begin on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 5:15 pm. Lessons are held at 1460 Midway Drive in Alpine and the tuition fee is $25 a month per participant with a sibling discount offered. The next performance is scheduled for July 17th at 7pm so mark your calendars. For more information or to sign up, please contact Terri at 619-723-0309 or visit www.ChristTheKingAlpine.org.
